Germany eSIM FAQ for US Travelers

Do I get a phone number with the eSIM?
No. Our eSIMs are data-only, so they do not come with a phone number. You use them for internet access — maps, WhatsApp, email, social media, streaming and any other app. Your existing SIM keeps your own phone number active.
Can I make or receive calls and text messages (SMS)?
Not standard calls or SMS — the eSIM provides cellular data only. You can call and message as much as you like through internet apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram, Signal or Messenger, which run on the eSIM's data. Standard calls and SMS keep working on your usual number through your home operator, as long as you keep that SIM active.
How much data do I need in Germany?
Many of our German customers on a 10 GB plan use all of it. If you will stream or video-call on a trip of more than a week, take 10 GB or more, or an unlimited day pass; for maps and messaging on a short visit, 3 or 5 GB is enough. Plans go from 3 GB for 15 days to 50 GB for 30 days, and unlimited day passes from 1 to 30 days, with fair use.
What network speeds will I get in Germany?
In towns and along main routes you should usually have 4G or better, on whichever of the three networks your phone picks. In rural areas, signal varies by network.
Can I share data with my laptop or tablet?
Yes, but only for Data Plans with a fixed data allowance. Unlimited plans do not support hotspot or tethering.
When should I install my Germany eSIM?
Install your eSIM while you still have WiFi at home - it is safe to do so days in advance for either plan type. Per-GB plans only start when the eSIM first connects to a network in Germany. Unlimited plans run on the travel dates you select at checkout, with the days counting from your chosen start date whether the eSIM is installed or not - so make sure it is on your phone by that date.

Setting up your eSIM? The installation and activation guide walks through it step by step, and the full FAQ covers device compatibility, hotspot, dual SIM and topping up.

Skip Airport WiFi in Germany - Land with Data Ready

Telekom, Vodafone or O2 - whichever has signal

This eSIM can use any of Germany's three established nationwide networks: Telekom, Vodafone and O2 (Telefónica). That matters in the countryside, where each network has its own gaps - Germans call them Funklöcher. If one drops out, pick another from the network list in your phone's mobile settings.

According to the regulator, the Bundesnetzagentur, about 97.5% of Germany's area had 4G from at least one network in January 2025, and its online Funkloch map shows where coverage is thin.

On an EU SIM? You may not need this

A SIM from an EU or EEA country already works in Germany at home prices under the EU's roam-like-at-home rules, within your operator's fair-use allowance. This eSIM is mainly for everyone else: the UK has not been covered since it left the EU, and Turkey, Switzerland and the US never were. On an EU SIM it is still useful if you need more data than your allowance.

On the train: ICE WiFi and the gaps between

Deutsche Bahn offers free WiFi on every ICE, in first and second class, with no time limit. It is shared by the whole train, and DB asks passengers to avoid heavy streaming and downloads. Only some IC and regional trains have WiFi, so the eSIM is what keeps you online on regional trains, the S-Bahn and trams, or when the on-board WiFi drops.

Why not just buy a German SIM?

You can, but German law requires your identity to be checked before a German prepaid SIM is activated - often by video call or in a shop. This eSIM is bought online before you travel, so there is no German ID check or shop visit, and it carries data only, with no German number.

Good to know before you go

Can I use it in Austria, Switzerland or the Netherlands too?+

No - it covers Germany only. On a train across the border it stops working once your phone switches to a foreign network, so buy an eSIM for the next country as well.

Is there 5G in Germany?+

All three networks have large 5G footprints. Whether your phone connects to 5G on this eSIM depends on the network it picks and your phone, so plan on 4G.

What US carriers charge in Germany

Using your US plan in Germany means a day pass on most carriers: a week on AT&T's or Verizon's comes to $84.00 for one line, against data plans from $3.44 here. The passes include calls and texts; our eSIMs are data-only and your US number keeps working beside them.
