Each Checkout link opens payment with that plan selected: only the email address and payment remain.

## How it works

1. Choose a plan and pay on the product page (card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal or crypto).
2. The eSIM QR code arrives by email; install it before you travel (Settings > Mobile/Cellular > Add eSIM).
3. On arrival, select the eSIM for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it. Your own SIM stays in the phone for calls and SMS.

Data-only: the eSIM has no phone number. Requires an eSIM-compatible, carrier-unlocked phone.

## For travelers from the US: what US carriers charge in India

A 10-day trip on a day pass is $120 on AT&T and $120 on Verizon, per line. The passes include calls and texts; this eSIM is data-only, and the US number keeps working beside it.

| Carrier | Cost in India | Details | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| AT&T | $12 a day (International Day Pass) | $6 a day for each extra line; at most 10 days are charged per line per bill. Elite 2.0 includes 20 GB a month abroad. | https://www.att.com/support/article/wireless/KM1175103/ |
| Verizon | $12 a day (TravelPass) | 5 GB of high-speed data a day, then 3G speeds. Or $100 a month for 20 GB. Unlimited Ultimate includes 15 GB a month abroad. | https://www.verizon.com/plans/international/international-travel/ |
| Google Fi | Included on Unlimited Premium | 50 GB of high-speed data in 200+ destinations; Flexible pays $10 per GB. | https://support.google.com/fi/answer/9462098 |
| Visible | Global Pass from $5 a day | Visible+ includes one Global Pass day a month, Visible+ Pro two. | https://www.visible.com/plans |
| T-Mobile | Not quoted | Its pages could not be read when these were checked. | - |

## Which network you get depends on the plan

The fixed-data plans run on Airtel. The unlimited day passes can use Airtel, Jio or Vi (Vodafone Idea), so they suit trips where one network may be weak. Neither uses BSNL, the state operator.

Coverage is strongest in the cities and along the main routes, and patchier in the mountains, deserts and on the islands. On the Andamans, travellers report that BSNL often has the best signal - and this eSIM cannot use it.

## Keep your Indian SIM for banking codes

This eSIM gives you data, not an Indian phone number, so the SMS codes that banks and many ride-hailing and delivery apps send cannot reach it. UPI apps also expect the SIM of your registered Indian number to be in the phone.

If you have an Indian SIM - visiting family, for example - keep it in the second slot for calls, codes and UPI, and let the eSIM handle data: dual-SIM phones run both at once. Without an Indian number, check before you travel which of your apps offer another way to sign in.

## eSIM or a local tourist SIM?

A local SIM is cheap, but foreign visitors usually need their passport and visa, a photo and often the name and number of a contact in India, and activation can take hours. The eSIM is set up at home before the trip.

## Kashmir, Ladakh and mobile data shutdowns

The authorities sometimes switch off mobile internet in a particular district or state, notably in Jammu and Kashmir and in Manipur. India has recorded more shutdowns than any other country over the past decade, according to the digital-rights group Access Now. Shutdown orders go to the mobile networks in the area, so expect a travel eSIM to go offline too.

In Jammu and Kashmir and in Ladakh, prepaid SIMs from other parts of India are reported not to work, and travel eSIMs may not either. The UK advises against all travel to Jammu and Kashmir, except air travel to and from Jammu city and travel within it.

## FAQ

### Will the eSIM work in Ladakh and Kashmir?

Do not count on it. Make sure you have another way to stay in touch there - a hotel landline, or a postpaid Indian SIM if you have one.

### Will I get 5G in India?

Airtel and Jio both run 5G in hundreds of cities, but a roaming eSIM is not guaranteed to connect to it, so plan on 4G.
