Malaysia eSIM FAQ for US Travelers
Do I get a phone number with the eSIM?
No. Our eSIMs are data-only, so they do not come with a phone number. You use them for internet access — maps, WhatsApp, email, social media, streaming and any other app. Your existing SIM keeps your own phone number active.
Can I make or receive calls and text messages (SMS)?
Not standard calls or SMS — the eSIM provides cellular data only. You can call and message as much as you like through internet apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram, Signal or Messenger, which run on the eSIM's data. Standard calls and SMS keep working on your usual number through your home operator, as long as you keep that SIM active.
How much data do I need in Malaysia?
Grab, maps and messaging use little data: 3 GB covers most week-long trips. Take 10 GB or more if you will stream, video-call or upload a lot of photos. Plans go from 1 GB for 7 days to 50 GB for 30 days (there is also 20 GB for 15 days), plus unlimited day passes with fair use.
What network speeds will I get in Malaysia?
In the cities and main towns you will usually be on 4G, with 5G possible where the network and your phone allow. In rural Borneo and on the smaller islands, signal can be weak or missing.
Can I share data with my laptop or tablet?
Yes, but only for Data Plans with a fixed data allowance. Unlimited plans do not support hotspot or tethering.
When should I install my Malaysia eSIM?
Install your eSIM while you still have WiFi at home - it is safe to do so days in advance for either plan type. Per-GB plans only start when the eSIM first connects to a network in Malaysia. Unlimited plans run on the travel dates you select at checkout, with the days counting from your chosen start date whether the eSIM is installed or not - so make sure it is on your phone by that date.
Setting up your eSIM? The installation and activation guide walks through it step by step, and the full FAQ covers device compatibility, hotspot, dual SIM and topping up.

Maxis or CelcomDigi, Malaysia's two largest networks
This eSIM runs on Maxis or CelcomDigi - the company formed when Celcom and Digi merged in 2022 (your phone may still show "Celcom" or "Digi" in its network list). It does not use U Mobile or Unifi. Both of its networks use DNB, the national wholesale 5G network, so 5G may be available where there is coverage and your phone supports it; plan on 4G.
Cities, Borneo and the islands
Coverage is strongest in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor Bahru and the other cities and main towns. In the interior of Sabah and Sarawak, and on highland trails, it can be weak or absent.
On the smaller islands, one resort can have good signal and the next none, so screenshot your ferry and hotel confirmations before you leave the mainland. If you are thinking of the islands and dive sites off eastern Sabah, check travel advice first: the UK advises against all but essential travel there.
Grab, banks and SMS codes
No Malaysian number comes with this eSIM, so it cannot receive the code Grab or a banking app may text you when you sign up or log in on a new phone. Register for Grab before you fly, or keep your home SIM switched on for texts while the eSIM handles data.
Malaysia only - not Singapore
The plans cover Malaysia only, so a trip on to Singapore needs a separate Singapore eSIM. Near the Causeway in Johor Bahru your phone may also pick up a Singaporean network, where this eSIM does not work: if data stops near the border, set the network to Maxis or CelcomDigi yourself instead of leaving it on automatic.
Good to know before you go
Does it work in Sabah and Sarawak?+
In Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and the main towns, usually. In the interior, along rivers and in national parks, coverage is limited, so plan for time offline.
Will I get 5G in Malaysia?+
Possibly, in the cities: both networks are on the national 5G network. A roaming eSIM is not guaranteed 5G, though, so count on 4G.
What US carriers charge in Malaysia
Using your US plan in Malaysia means a day pass on most carriers: a week on AT&T's or Verizon's comes to $84.00 for one line, against data plans from $4.57 here. The passes include calls and texts; our eSIMs are data-only and your US number keeps working beside them.
Visible+ includes one Global Pass day a month, Visible+ Pro two.
From each carrier’s own pages, read October 24, 2026; check your carrier’s country list before you travel. T-Mobile is not shown: we could not read its price pages.
