Mexico eSIM FAQ for US Travelers
Do I get a phone number with the eSIM?
No. Our eSIMs are data-only, so they do not come with a phone number. You use them for internet access — maps, WhatsApp, email, social media, streaming and any other app. Your existing SIM keeps your own phone number active.
Can I make or receive calls and text messages (SMS)?
Not standard calls or SMS — the eSIM provides cellular data only. You can call and message as much as you like through internet apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram, Signal or Messenger, which run on the eSIM's data. Standard calls and SMS keep working on your usual number through your home operator, as long as you keep that SIM active.
How much data do I need in Mexico?
It depends on the plan you choose. Across nearly 3,000 of our customers' finished eSIMs, the typical one used half to two-thirds of its plan, and on the smaller plans (1-5 GB) about one in three used all of it. Maps and messaging use little; video, video calls and sharing your connection use the most. If in doubt, take the next size up. If you do run out, you can buy another eSIM at any time - you will need WiFi to install it.
What network speeds will I get in Mexico?
Your Mexico eSIM uses a local cell network: 4G, and 5G where the network offers it. Speed depends on coverage and your location.
Can I share data with my laptop or tablet?
Yes, but only for Data Plans with a fixed data allowance. Unlimited plans do not support hotspot or tethering.
When should I install my Mexico eSIM?
Install your eSIM while you still have WiFi at home - it is safe to do so days in advance for either plan type. Per-GB plans only start when the eSIM first connects to a network in Mexico. Unlimited plans run on the travel dates you select at checkout, with the days counting from your chosen start date whether the eSIM is installed or not - so make sure it is on your phone by that date.
Setting up your eSIM? The installation and activation guide walks through it step by step, and the full FAQ covers device compatibility, hotspot, dual SIM and topping up.

Your eSIM for Mexico - Cancun, the Riviera Maya and beyond
One plan covers all of Mexico, so the same eSIM works in Cancun, Tulum, Mexico City and Los Cabos. Install it before you travel, turn off airplane mode on arrival, and you are connected for transfers, maps and messaging straight away.
Getting online at Cancun and Mexico City
The eSIM connects when you switch off airplane mode at Cancun (CUN), Mexico City (MEX) or Los Cabos (SJD). Your resort or hotel transfer, rideshare and maps are ready before you reach the taxi line - handy at busy arrival halls like Cancun.
Coverage on the coast and in the cities
Mexico's networks (Telcel, AT&T Mexico and Movistar) cover the resort corridors of the Riviera Maya and Los Cabos, the big cities and the main highways with solid 4G and growing 5G. Remote stretches of the Yucatan interior and mountain roads can thin out, so save offline maps for cenote trips and long drives.
Good to know before you go
Does it work all along the Riviera Maya (Playa del Carmen, Tulum)?+
Yes - the Cancun-Tulum corridor and the main resort areas are well covered. Remote jungle and some cenote sites can drop signal, so download offline maps for excursions.
Is one plan enough for Cancun and Mexico City?+
Yes - it is a single nationwide plan, so the same eSIM works on the coast and in the capital with no switching.
What US carriers charge in Mexico
Many US unlimited plans already cover Mexico, so check yours before you buy anything. An eSIM is for the plans that don't, or for more high-speed data than your plan gives you there.
2 GB of data a day; the base Visible plan has no roaming data.
From each carrier’s own pages, read October 24, 2026; check your carrier’s country list before you travel. T-Mobile is not shown: we could not read its price pages.
