Egypt eSIM FAQ for US Travelers
Do I get a phone number with the eSIM?
No. Our eSIMs are data-only, so they do not come with a phone number. You use them for internet access — maps, WhatsApp, email, social media, streaming and any other app. Your existing SIM keeps your own phone number active.
Can I make or receive calls and text messages (SMS)?
Not standard calls or SMS — the eSIM provides cellular data only. You can call and message as much as you like through internet apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram, Signal or Messenger, which run on the eSIM's data. Standard calls and SMS keep working on your usual number through your home operator, as long as you keep that SIM active.
How much data do I need in Egypt?
It depends on the plan you choose. Across nearly 3,000 of our customers' finished eSIMs, the typical one used half to two-thirds of its plan, and on the smaller plans (1-5 GB) about one in three used all of it. Maps and messaging use little; video, video calls and sharing your connection use the most. If in doubt, take the next size up. If you do run out, you can buy another eSIM at any time - you will need WiFi to install it.
What network speeds will I get in Egypt?
Your Egypt eSIM uses a local cell network: 4G, and 5G where the network offers it. Speed depends on coverage and your location.
Can I share data with my laptop or tablet?
Yes, but only for Data Plans with a fixed data allowance. Unlimited plans do not support hotspot or tethering.
When should I install my Egypt eSIM?
Install your eSIM while you still have WiFi at home - it is safe to do so days in advance for either plan type. Per-GB plans only start when the eSIM first connects to a network in Egypt. Unlimited plans run on the travel dates you select at checkout, with the days counting from your chosen start date whether the eSIM is installed or not - so make sure it is on your phone by that date.
Setting up your eSIM? The installation and activation guide walks through it step by step, and the full FAQ covers device compatibility, hotspot, dual SIM and topping up.
Your eSIM for Egypt - Red Sea resorts, Cairo and the Nile
One plan covers Egypt end to end - the Red Sea resorts, Cairo, Luxor and Aswan - so the same eSIM works whether you are diving in Sharm el-Sheikh or cruising the Nile. Install it before you fly and you skip the local SIM kiosk and its passport-registration paperwork entirely.
Getting online at Cairo, Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada
The eSIM connects when you switch off airplane mode at Cairo (CAI), Sharm el-Sheikh (SSH) or Hurghada (HRG). Your resort transfer, taxi app and maps are ready immediately - useful when arrival halls are busy and you would rather not queue for a SIM.
Coverage in the resorts, cities and along the Nile
Egypt's networks (Vodafone, Orange, Etisalat and WE) cover the resort areas, the main cities and the Nile corridor with solid 4G; 5G is rolling out in the larger cities. Expect coverage to fade out in the open desert and at remote desert camps, so download offline maps before excursions to places like the White Desert.
Good to know before you go
Do I need to register a passport like with a local Egyptian SIM?+
No. Local Egyptian SIMs require passport registration at the point of sale; a travel eSIM you install yourself skips that paperwork entirely.
Does it work in Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada?+
Yes - the Red Sea resort areas are well covered. Coverage thins in the open desert, so save offline maps for desert excursions.
What US carriers charge in Egypt
Using your US plan in Egypt means a day pass on most carriers: a week on AT&T's or Verizon's comes to $84.00 for one line, against data plans from $4.40 here. The passes include calls and texts; our eSIMs are data-only and your US number keeps working beside them.
Visible+ includes one Global Pass day a month, Visible+ Pro two.
From each carrier’s own pages, read October 24, 2026; check your carrier’s country list before you travel. T-Mobile is not shown: we could not read its price pages.
