Libya eSIM FAQ for US Travelers
Do I get a phone number with the eSIM?
No. Our eSIMs are data-only, so they do not come with a phone number. You use them for internet access — maps, WhatsApp, email, social media, streaming and any other app. Your existing SIM keeps your own phone number active.
Can I make or receive calls and text messages (SMS)?
Not standard calls or SMS — the eSIM provides cellular data only. You can call and message as much as you like through internet apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram, Signal or Messenger, which run on the eSIM's data. Standard calls and SMS keep working on your usual number through your home operator, as long as you keep that SIM active.
How much data do I need in Libya?
Most of our Libya customers use well under their plan, so 1 or 3 GB is usually enough for messaging, maps and email. Take 5 or 10 GB for a month of daily video calls.
What network speeds will I get in Libya?
You will be on Al-Madar's 4G, at its best in the coastal cities. Away from the coast, signal is weak or missing.
Can I share data with my laptop or tablet?
Yes, but only for Data Plans with a fixed data allowance. Unlimited plans do not support hotspot or tethering.
When should I install my Libya eSIM?
Install your eSIM while you still have WiFi at home - it is safe to do so days in advance for either plan type. Per-GB plans only start when the eSIM first connects to a network in Libya. Unlimited plans run on the travel dates you select at checkout, with the days counting from your chosen start date whether the eSIM is installed or not - so make sure it is on your phone by that date.
Setting up your eSIM? The installation and activation guide walks through it step by step, and the full FAQ covers device compatibility, hotspot, dual SIM and topping up.
Most people in Libya are on Libyana; this eSIM uses the smaller state-owned network, Al-Madar, on 4G. It cannot switch to Libyana, so where only Libyana has signal you will be without data.
Al-Madar's coverage is best along the coast, in Tripoli, Benghazi, Misrata and the other cities. Reports on the south - around Sabha, Ubari and Ghat - differ, but coverage there is limited and in places absent, so do not count on it away from the coast.
Travel advice, power cuts and outages
The UK advises against all travel to most of Libya and against all but essential travel to Tripoli, Benghazi, Misrata and a few other areas (updated 21 July 2026); Canada advises avoiding all travel. If you are going anyway, register with your government's travel registration service, where it has one.
Long power cuts hit Tripoli and western Libya in summer 2026, and internet access in Tripoli was disrupted for hours during unrest in May 2025. Carry a power bank, and keep addresses and contacts offline.
Fixed plans only, or a local SIM
There are no unlimited plans for Libya: you choose 1 GB for 7 days, 3 GB for 15 days, or 5 GB or 10 GB for 30 days. The eSIM is data-only, with no Libyan number. The alternative is a local SIM, which means registering in person with your passport at a Libyana or Al-Madar shop.
Good to know before you go
Can people in Libya call me on this eSIM?+
Not on a phone number - it has none. They can reach you over WhatsApp or other internet calling while you have Al-Madar signal; for a Libyan number, you need a local SIM.
Is there 5G in Libya?+
Only on a limited scale in parts of Tripoli. This eSIM uses Al-Madar's 4G.
What US carriers charge in Libya
Using your US plan in Libya means a day pass on most carriers: a week on AT&T's or Verizon's comes to $84.00 for one line, against data plans from $15.76 here. The passes include calls and texts; our eSIMs are data-only and your US number keeps working beside them.
Visible+ includes one Global Pass day a month, Visible+ Pro two.
